Eric shared with the youth group the time when he accompanied his father to the service club's Christmas party held at a children's home. His father explained that there would be gifts for the children and that he would not receive any presents. Eric told his father that he understood.
The children at the home were treated to a nice meal and then they sang a couple of Christmas carols before opening their gifts. The children were delighted, having received gifts of toys. Eric remembers the joy on the faces of the children as they opened their presents.
As Eric watched he began thinking of the many gifts that he and his brother would receive that Christmas. They would also receive presents from their grandparents. They expected gifts where the children at the home did not. That was the difference.
It was from that experience that Eric would always buy gifts for the children at the local children's home. That was why each Christmas he would take the youth fellowship with him to watch the joy on the faces of the children as they opened their gifts.
King David took stock of his life when he prayed, "Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?"
