Today I saw Him, Christ ...
body broken,
eyes glazed, sightless,
... broken, bleeding, dying,
lying by the highway.
No doubt other drivers
saw a doe.
But it was Christ; I knew.
I felt so helpless, lonely,
hopeless, knowing
there was nothing
I could do
to aid the broken doe,
the broken Christ.
I wept, and watched
my tears disappear
in fresh-turned dirt
beneath a newly-planted tree;
saw within its wholeness,
in its evergreenness,
