In February 2001, thirteen-month-old Erika Nordby wandered from her home in
Edmonton, Alberta, dressed only in a light sleeper and diaper. The temperature was well
below freezing. Erika froze to death. When her mother found her at 3 a.m. Erika had
already been outside an estimated three to four hours. Her toes were frozen together, her
heart wasn't beating, and her body temperature was less than one-half of normal.
