Fedor Dostoevsky, in the Brothers Karamazov, tells of "The Grand Inquisitor." Jesus returns unexpectedly to Seville, and his silent presence causes a great stir. An elderly bishop has him hauled in the dungeons where he is attacked for having challenged the church which bears his name. The bishop closes his cross examination with the judgment, "Tomorrow, I will burn you. Dixi. (I have spoken)."
