In the film, Gangs of New York, Amsterdam Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio) returns to the city to avenge the killing of his father by Bill "The Butcher" Poole (Daniel Day Lewis). The film depicts the early gang violence in New York contemporary with the American Civil War that forms a backdrop for the formation of the Mafia. Upon arrival in the city it is important for Vallon to blend in, so he affiliates with a gang of young Irishmen. Shortly thereafter they loot a building that has been set on fire. After escaping the fire with their goods, they gather to assess what they've garnered.
