The Fourth of July, the great American holiday, may mean only fireworks to our children and grandchildren. However, in our churches we cannot approach this day without taking note of our religious liberty in this historic enterprise of political freedom. In the Constitutional convention of 1787, initially, the delegates were not particularly concerned with the guarantee of religious freedom on a national level. They tended to think of that as a matter for the determination of the individual states.
