Francis Bernadone was expected to lead the life of a wealthy Italian cloth merchant, first assisting his father in the family business, and eventually succeeding him. At the age of 20, a serious illness made him dissatisfied with his worldly life, and he resolved to devote himself to prayer and the service of the poor. On a pilgrimage to Rome he was moved by compassion for the city's beggars to exchange his clothes with a beggar, and to spend a day himself begging for alms, teaching him both the joys and the hardships of poverty.
