Frederick William I was King...
Illustration
Frederick William I was King of Prussia from 1713 to 1740. He made Prussia into a major world power, but also made a big ugly thing of himself. Eccentric and obese, he shunned the trappings of royalty, such as bodyguards and entourage. And while he roamed through Berlin freely and frequently, he also gave his temper free reign, and frequently. He didn't walk softly, but he did carry a big walking stick.
Wily denizens of Berlin kept a keen eye out for Frederick William I, and if they saw him coming gave him a wide berth.
