A friend and his wife are both over fifty years of age. They've been married for over thirty years. They've raised three kids and are respectable members of society. But when her mother is coming for a visit, she goes on a cleaning frenzy around the house (and, of course, expects my friend to join in wholeheartedly). My friend has suggested to his wife that the reason for the visit is not to bring out the white gloves and make sure everything is perfectly clean, but to enjoy time together. Still, she says, "I want the house to look just right ... she's my mother!"
