Frithjof Meidell, a Norwegian immigrant...

Frithjof Meidell, a Norwegian immigrant who sought his fortune in the California Gold Rush, found a treasure instead in the beauty of the Sierra Nevadas. In a letter he wrote to his mother, he described a particular spring walk on a Sunday morning. The glorious splendor of the mountains caused him to sit down to take it all in. It seemed to him that God had just created this magnificent scene with the towering snow-capped peaks above and a floral carpet of splendor below. With "no trace of a human presence," he was overcome with the grandeur of God.
