Fruit growers have years of expenses before they reap even one harvest. First, there's the cost of the land, the equipment to work the land, and the property taxes. Next, comes the cost of the trees and the cost of the labor to plant the trees. Add to that the cost of the manure with which to feed the soil and the cost of supplies to protect the trees. Now, consider the three- to four-year waiting period until the trees bear fruit and the cost of harvesting and shipping.
