George knew what it meant...

George knew what it meant not to have enough: not enough money to pay the rent, not enough food to feed his family, not enough time to find a third job and still maintain the two he had, not enough coal oil for the furnace as winter loomed closer with each passing day. Yes, indeed, George knew what it was not to have enough. His experiences had left him bitter and stingy, a prisoner chained by what had been, unfree to explore the possibilities of what might result from sharing. Consequently, he had been terribly alone, a difficult person for anyone to care for or be around.
