Commentary
The ethical injunctions in the gospel lesson from Luke for this Sunday, like their parallels in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew's gospel, are both attractive and threatening. They are attractive, in part, for their noble, heroic challenge; in part, for their soaring freedom from the mean restraints that lock some people into degrading poverty; in part, for their exaltation of fundamental relationships with God and others.
