Good Samaritan laws are misnamed...
Illustration
"Good Samaritan" laws are misnamed. Found on the books of a number of jurisdictions in the U.S. and Canada, these statutes provide protection for those who give emergency assistance to others. Removing possible legal penalties for helping someone in need allows us to emulate the priest or the Levite, not the Samaritan. Thirty-odd years after the fact, the story of Kitty Genovese's murder has passed into North American folklore. As a mugger stabbed her again and again, her screams were ignored by over 50 people in surrounding buildings.
