The gospels are unanimous. John the Baptist appeared on the scene as a prelude to the presence of Jesus, and he appeared in the setting of the desert. He did not come to the sunny shores of the Sea of Galilee to baptize, nor did he vent his harsh, evangelistic zeal upon the Sadducees and temple priests of Jerusalem. He came to the remote wastelands of the desert.
