The Greek philosopher Plato...
Illustration
The Greek philosopher Plato once observed that if you wish to see yourself, you should closely view a large city. The contrasts are vivid. You'll find marvelous concert halls and vast museums. But you'll also find squalid slums reeking of decay and despair. There are financial districts from which decisions go out to influence the world. But you'll also find red light districts where pimps send their prostitutes to meet furtive men in the shadows. In the great city, you'll find skyscrapers reaching for the heavens; but also drunken people sleeping on the streets.
