H. Beecher Hicks' Preaching Through a Storm, is a marvelous book on his struggles in building the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. Hicks observes that in ministry clergy are often headed toward, emerging from or in the midst of a storm. Controversy and trials are an integral part of life in the church and the preacher must exemplify a will to preach Christ through such adversity. The lives of great preachers are filled with the storms of personal suffering and opposition.
