Harold Shippy and Dale Gates...
Illustration
Harold Shippy and Dale Gates were the adult drivers and chaperones taking some teen boys to Mammoth Cave, Kentucky. Dale would be the "chief cook and bottle washer" and a good assistant to Harold who was the boys' class teacher and the acknowledged captain of this trip. With five boys in each car, plus a driver, things were crowded. It was early on that difficulties showed up and a Solomon was wanted. Leaving their hometown in Michigan, they headed south for Kentucky. Within five minutes of highway driving it began to rain. The bottom line is, it rained every day of the five-day trip.
