Harvard University was in the process of building Emerson Hall. Emerson Hall was to be the new home for the philosophy department of that renowned institution. President Charles Eliot of Harvard was looking for a suitable inscription to be carved into the stone lintel above the main door. He invited Dr. William James to offer an inscription. James was a well-respected psychologist and philosopher. James said that he would give it some thought.
