Hattie held her breath. She hadn't heard from her son in almost two years. But now her son, Paul, had called to wish her a Happy Mother's Day. Paul chatted for a few minutes about his three children and trivial things and then they said goodbye. Hattie sighed. Paul had had a disagreement with his dad and had slowly withdrawn from the family altogether. There wasn't a day that Hattie didn't think about her son. When a black truck would go by, her heart would skip, thinking maybe Paul was coming to visit. Hattie's other four children visited regularly.
