Have you ever seen a firefly during the day? Have you ever wondered why not? Maybe they're nocturnal and only fly at night. But even if they were out in the daytime, would you notice? It's their flashing light that attracts our attention. Would we see their flickering phosphorescence without darkness against which to contrast it? How can any of us know what light is unless we have experienced darkness? Understanding comes through our experience of contrasts. Just as joy can never grace a tearless eye, so it is necessary for us at times to pass through darkness in order to discern light.
