He had to make a choice. There was a price if he agreed to do what they asked of him; it could cost him his life. But what if he didn't. Wasn't there a price of that, too? He might survive physically, but living as a coward, he'd be dead inside. This was one of those awful dilemmas for which there appeared to be no right answer. He guessed this was similar to the problem Peter had faced the day they crucified Jesus. Three times Peter could have been a witness for his friend, for who he was, for what he offered the world. But it would probably have cost Peter his life.
