Hearing reality is always a difficult thing. The people of Israel did not want to hear what Jeremiah had to say. Jeremiah also prophesied a new covenant with God for the people of the earth. As Christians, we know the reality of that new covenant. One thing we can now do is face our reality as it is, accept the consequences, and try, from the great store of strength which God gives us, to make new life out of the old. C. A. Campbell, a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard University, writes: "[We must] face our physical and mental crudity and honestly strive, with such coarse, raw material, to weave as good a texture as we can." This is the call of the people of God.
