In his book, The Road Less Traveled, psychiatrist M. Scott Peck writes that psychiatry has become a fairly accurate science today, that more is known now about what causes many neuroses than ever before. We also know how many of these illnesses can be healed. But what we do not know, he says, is why often these neuroses are not worse than they are. That's because many people have terrible things happen to them that leave deep emotional scars. Yet surprisingly, many people with awful pasts manage to function pretty well despite these things.
