A hospital chaplain often will accompany a doctor into a patient's room to deliver bad news. The doctors sadly tell the family that medical science has accomplished all it can. The end of life is near. The patient has the right to know the diagnosis, so final plans can be made.
The chaplain talks about "advanced directives." That is a fancy way of saying written instructions to reflect the patient's wishes when the illness has taken over the body. Hospitals want to make sure they follow the wishes of the patient.
