How slow we were to realize that we must build a monument to the veterans of Vietnam. It was a war we wanted to forget. And yet we could not because we need to make a covenant. The symbols of death and destruction as well as victory were erected in that U.S. soil -- a permanent reminder that sought not to glorify war, but to speak to future generations.
