Hugh looked around the room...

Hugh looked around the room. He hated office parties, but his wife Penny was right: as the "boss" Hugh was expected to give a holiday party, and this would help boost morale. He and Penny welcomed each guest at the door. There was Marcia, who had broken up two marriages. And Ted was known for his lavish after-hours parties. Shelly chain-smoked on the terrace. Hugh knew he would be carrying out Gordie, who had already started to party before coming. Penny came to give Hugh a little squeeze on the arm. She knew how uncomfortable he was. Hugh slowly sipped his cola. There was Bonnie on the couch, talking to Robert about the recent merger. Edie had stopped by Margo's house to pick her up. Margo was very courageous as she battled cancer. Lisa had dropped off the children at her mom's so she could come. She was the youngest partner in the firm and needed time to adjust to being a widow. Hugh smiled at Penny from across the room. She was talking about the latest strike and the latest hairdo. What a mix -- what a group! Each so different, yet none so different from others. Hugh opened the door to let in another guest.
