If you have ever seen a line graph of the stock market, you will see how there have been many ups and downs since the Great Depression, but the overall movement has been up. If you compare five-year periods you might find some losses, but in ten-year periods there are very few losses and greater overall gains. In twenty-year periods you will find greater gains still. The bottom line, investing experts will tell you, is that stocks outperform bonds and other more conservative investments over a long period of time. By looking at the graph once again, you can see the results.
