If you've ever studied a musical instrument, you'll know the truth of the saying "practice makes perfect." As a child, I used to hate hearing that. I was one of those piano students who could sight-read almost anything. I used to hate having to practice and my sight-reading abilities made me feel as if I could fool anyone who listened to me play. I used that trick on my teachers until I graduated to the senior teaching staff at the School of Music where I studied. In a matter of lessons, my new teacher had me pegged. "You play so well," he said. "Imagine how well you'd play if you only practiced." His words have stayed with me for 25 years. I try to apply his teaching to all aspects of my life -- my faith included. -- Conroy
