The invitation read that there would be a surprise baby shower at the church. The women of the church organized the shower and were looking forward to buying gifts and, of course, holding the infant. The baby shower would include women of all ages.
On the appointed day, the young mother who was new to the church was surprised with the shower. The women sat in a circle in the fellowship hall and watched as the gifts were opened. There were the usual toys, blankets, and plenty of baby clothing, even a rocking chair among the many gifts. The highlight of the afternoon came when the women had the opportunity to hold the baby. It seemed that each woman held the baby long enough to look into her eyes.
One of the women, Minnie loved to talk about her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She spoke to the newborn although no one could hear what she was saying. If only the child could communicate with the older person holding her she would see many years of experience, trials as well as joys, and a deep faith in Christ. Their lives were just overlapping for a few years. The baby was just starting, beginning the journey of life and would out-live the woman who was holding her. The baby would experience events that the older woman never would.
Simeon and Anna had spent many years waiting and watching as young couples brought their babies to the temple on a regular basis. They both felt the Spirit as the baby Jesus was presented. They both realized that this was no ordinary baby. Simeon and Anna had waited a lifetime for that moment.
