Irving Lazar, a well-connected literary agent, worked with former President Richard Nixon in planning his memoirs. Nixon invited Lazar to his Pacific Coast compound to listen to the agent's proposals. Lazar envisioned a $2 million advance. After three hours of conversation, they shook hands on the deal.
As he rose to leave, Lazar, who was impressed by Nixon's stamina, toughness, and appearance, said, "You know, there is one way you could make even more money than you can on this book." Nixon said, "What's that?" Came the reply, "Leave your body to Harvard Medical School."
