It is doubtful that we will ever see as dramatic a repentance as Jonah saw in Nineveh, but there have been occasions in history when a group of people have been convicted of their sin and have repented en masse.
Such was the case on January 15, 1697, in Salem and Massachusetts Bay. Five years earlier, the area was awash in witch-hunts and trials. Over 150 people, mostly women and misfits, were charged with being witches, nineteen of whom were hanged. Despite the protests of some members of the community, notably Increase Mather, the trials proceeded.
