It gives me hope when I hear the apostle Paul saying that he wants to do what's
right, but all too often falls short.
If Paul, who did so much to spread the Christian faith, says he's not able to be what he wants to be as a follower of Jesus, then there's hope for me. Paul laments, "Who will rescue me from this body of death?"
It reminds me of a Negro spiritual based on this very same passage, Romans 7:
O wretched [person] that I am!
O wretched [person] that I am!
Who will deliver poor me?
My heart is filled with sadness and pain,
Who will deliver poor me?
Paul answers the question in the first two verses of the next chapter:
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.
