It has only been in the last few years that there has been a machine that can take a picture of an atom. Like so many things today, it is done electronically, since no amount of optical magnification could show us what a tiny atom looks like. Only now we are able to see something that has been known about for more than a century. Humans have presumed atoms, developed theories about the atom and used the power of the atom long before anyone ever saw an atom. Thus, it seems our scientific studies were based on a lot of faith as well as knowledge.
