It wasn't easy being a maverick, out of step with the cultural majority. It tended to marginalize a person, make him unacceptable in "polite" society. Partly due to circumstances of his birth, partly for economic reasons, partly by choice, the man lived on the edge. He pushed laws to their limits -- even broke them when circumstances required. Sometimes he had enough to eat; sometimes he went hungry. Sometimes he had a place to sleep; sometimes there was no place to lay his head. He knew what it meant to be the victim of mob violence.
