Jerusalem, the city or...
Illustration
Jerusalem, the "city" or "foundation of peace," has seen more war and conflict than almost any other city on earth. It has few natural advantages and is one of the few important cities of the world that does not lie on a seacoast or along navigable water. Nor was it on a major trade route or close to natural resources.
Why, then, has it been important for so many centuries? Two factors account for its importance: it had one of the few unfailing sources of water in the area, and it could be easily defended because of steep valleys on the south, east, and west.
