Joey sat tall as he...

Joey sat tall as he waited for his name to be called. He didn't care what others thought of him anymore. He had learned his lesson long ago. Long ago was actually only about three years ago, when he went forward for an altar call. Joey had known in his heart it was the right thing. All the words made sense and he couldn't shake the feeling that this was the truth he had longed for. He was going to make public his promise to follow Jesus. He stood up and walked forward to receive a blessing and afterward some counseling, a Bible, and a business card. He wasn't surprised at what he received later that week: phone calls ostracizing him, friends calling him names, angry stares. A "tough kid" wasn't supposed to be going to church, must less publicly admitting he wanted to be a Christian. It was unheard of. But Joey stood fast and was encouraged by his new church friends to be involved in the youth group. Joey was a natural leader and his gifts blossomed under the leaders' guidance. At times he missed his childhood friends. Today he was receiving an award. It was for community excellence after Joey organized a group to rebuild a church burned down by an arsonist's angry and pathetic hand. Joey felt proud and although he had lost childhood friends, he had gained new friends who would help him in his new life.
