John Adams had to be strong and noble to accept second place twice as the first Vice President of the United States, to carry off his deep friendship with Benjamin Franklin and later with Jefferson, and to fulfill his two terms as President in a difficult time. He did have a streak of smallness, but he succeeded in spite of it. Back in May of '64, when he was courting Abigail Smith, he was gracious enough to list her faults. What a charming, endearing thing to do, to render this service to the woman you love, to show her where she needs to improve.
