John, who was still in university, liked to visit his brother, Alec, who was in his last year of seminary. He especially enjoyed the good companionship that Alec had with all of his fellow seminarians. They were like a family who accepted one another and so made a strong community. He always enjoyed the "tradition" at the end of the day of sipping a glass of sherry while discussing world events and the theological insights that could be brought to them. Then they would all go to evening prayers with the rest of the college community. They sang so enthusiastically with unbridled fervor. John was never quite sure how much of it was evidence of the Spirit or an outcome of the "spirits" in the sherry. But no matter, the singing and the melody came from their hearts. The little bit of sherry was nothing more than a warm reminder to let the day go and give thanks to God for all of his gifts so freely given. -- Fairlie
