Jovana Jovanovic is a woman who spent more than four years in a "collective center"
(refugee camp) outside the Montenegran coastal city of Ulcinj in the late 1990s. She
entered the camp in a wheelchair, having fallen and broken her back, but even the
depressing conditions in the camp could not keep her down. She was soon up and on her
feet, helping in the distribution of food parcels sent by Christian agencies. With the few
dinars she was able to save, she managed to buy a small plot of land, with the goal of
building a small house on it where she could live with her daughter, once the war was
over.
"Many dreams have died here," Jovana acknowledged to a reporter, nodding her head to indicate the camp. "Stay too long and the collective center mentality starts to kill you. Stop dreaming and you die."
Daniel, likewise, knew that if you stop dreaming, you die.
