Julia came to town as a young war bride fresh from England, 21-years-old and pregnant. She arrived before the end of the war, before her husband had been discharged. She moved in with her husband's parents, farmers who struggled through the war years, and who resented this foreign girl who had come to live with them.
When Julia's husband finally came home, he did so minus both legs and suffered what was then called shell shock. Within two years, he died.
