On June 16, 1991, Cardinal John J. O'Connor of New York preached a Father's Day sermon in Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan. The New York Times reported that "the cardinal used his Father's Day sermon to remind the faithful that God should be described only in male terms, such as Father and He. God should not be described, he said, in female terms such as Mother and She." In light of today's passage from Trio-Isaiah, we need to reflect on feminine images for God. Hosea portrayed God as "a she-bear robbed of her cubs (Hosea 13:8, NEB)."
