Karen was driving her Girl Guides home when suddenly Angela began to cry. Karen tried to get Angela to talk, but couldn't. The following week Karen made a point of taking Angela home last. Before she drove Angela home Karen asked, "Angela, do you want to stop for a donut and a cold drink so we can talk?" Angela nodded yes. Already the tears were beginning to run silently down her face. Slowly Karen was able to convince Angela that she could be trusted. As Angela talked, Karen learned that her father often yelled at her mother. Sometimes he hit her. Sometimes he would even push her mother's head into the dishwater and hold it there. Angela was afraid her mother was going to die. After hearing Angela's story, Karen was appalled. She somehow managed calmly to ask Angela if there was anything else that was worrying her. "Yes," Angela said. "I'm afraid that my mother is going to be stolen in the night and that I'll have to live with my father all by myself." Karen asked Angela if she would like to get together with her mother and her pastor and talk about her fears. Angela agreed. The pastor was horrified to hear of Angela's fears. The pastor met with Karen, Angela, and Angela's mother. Their meetings helped Angela overcome her fear.
