Karl Menningen, the renowned psychiatrist, attracted considerable attention with his book Whatever Became of Sin? The question is a good one because a good deal of energy has been spent in trying to eliminate the idea of sin. The effort to rid ourselves of the notion of sin can be attributed in a large part to Freud who helped to affirm our basic selfishness and to demonstrate our capacity for evil. However, the remedy was not to inhibit basic desires, but to give them freedom. We have not yet recovered from the impact this idea had on society.
