Kaye O'Bara, 72, of Miami, has sacrificed the last half of her life for someone she considers more important than herself. She has cared for her daughter, Edwarda, since January 3, 1970, when she slipped in a diabetic coma. For thirty years, 24 hours a day, every day, except for a dozen days or so after she had suffered a heart attack, the mother has drawn and checked Edwarda's blood sugar, cleaned her, cleared her lungs, and fed her through a tube. Someone once shot into the bedroom trying to kill Edwarda, now 46, thinking that that was proper.
