Often, when the General Assembly of the United Presbyterian Church is meeting in a particular city, bumper stickers appear on cars saying, "We believe in predestination, BUT drive carefully; the person you hit may be a Presbyterian!" As bumper stickers go, those weren't particularly great ones. The very fact that they were even printed, however, was significant. We tend to make jokes about things that frighten us, and predestination is one of those things. Somehow, we have gotten the idea that God's will is often unpleasant and frightening.
