Elijah was about to be taken away from Elisha ("to heaven by a whirlwind"). At three points along the day's journey, Elijah counseled Elisha, "Tarry here." Three times Elisha refused, saying, "I will not leave you." What a beautiful picture of devoted friendship!
The scene is an interesting contrast with Mark's account of the Transfiguration: On the Mount of Transfiguration, it is Peter who wants to "tarry" there and it is Jesus who encourages him to move along.
