A racer in training for the Olympics told a reporter that to win a race one cannot wait until just before the race is to be held to prepare for it. "Rather," said he, "one must spend years in training and preparation for just that moment." It means discipline. It means to strive for the highest goal of athletes: winning the gold medal in the Olympics.
Undoubtedly there are times when a racer in training is tempted to break the rules and dissipate. After all, just once, maybe. Not so! If an Olympic racer is to win, his/her body must be kept under control. Can you think of a famous racer breaking training the week before a great race and then expecting to win the prize? It is simply unthinkable.
St. Paul offers a warning to those who once believed in Christ, and started out to live clean lives under control, but then seemingly lost their way. He calls such persons castaways, and indicates how easy it would be to become one.
