One of the elements of the law, according to Jesus, was that we should love our neighbor as ourself. This love for fellow human beings has far-reaching consequences, not only in wanting them to be brought into saving faith which is so meaningful for Christians, but also into the daily activities of life. It may involve one's family also.
No parents with any sense would want to act in such a way as to cause their child to suffer harm. No thinking person would leave a loaded pistol where a toddler could get to it and shoot him or herself or someone else. A youth may see an adult doing something and think it is all right for him/her to do the same thing. Sometimes adults have to remember who is following in their footsteps.
There was no harm for the Christian to enjoy the food once offered to idols that obviously could not eat it. But St. Paul indicated that if eating such meat caused a brother or sister to fall he would not eat the meat. St. Paul gave us in this illustration the best reason for the principle of true abstinence which lets people know we care.
