In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Jim Carrey, the future star of such movies as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Bruce Almighty, was still a struggling stand-up comic trying to make it big as an actor. For motivation and inspiration, he expressed his belief in his talent by writing a check to himself for a million dollars and dating it three years in the future. And sure enough, three years later, he was the highest paid actor in Hollywood -- easily able to cash his old check.
